Making a Difference for Noah

Like our "Happy Endings", Noah’s story is one that clearly speaks to the meaning of rescue and what can be accomplished when caring people band together. The goodness and generosity of "Golden" people continues to be overwhelming. Following is Noah’s story and the updates on his progress.

Meet Noah

My name is Noah and I am a one year old Golden Retriever.  I entered the Golden Retriever Rescue Club of Charlotte on May 2, 1999. My previous owner called the rescue chairperson and told her I was an outside dog, and at six months of age I was diagnosed with severe Hip Dysplasia. He didn’t feel like I was in any pain, and he would give me away if he could find me a good home. He also said if he couldn’t find me a good home, he would just keep me in the backyard, and when I couldn’t walk he would take me to the vet and have me destroyed, or he would do it himself. From what I hear, a statement like that will get me into the rescue program pretty quickly! To complicate matters, I am also heartworm positive.

I am very good looking and love to play and retrieve, but I am in pain. I need two new hips in order to be able to play and retrieve in the future. I have a great temperament, I like dogs, cats and children, and I will make a wonderful addition to someone’s family if I am given the chance.

The cost of my hip surgery will be at least $5,600 and that doesn’t include my shots, heartworm treatment or other necessities. GRRCC has some money in Casey’s Miracle Fund, but it’s not enough to see me through this. I know I am asking a lot, but if you could meet me, I know you would do your best to help me. GRRCC had two options. They could save me, or euthanize me. They want to save me!!! And I really like that option.

Please help me.

Love,
Noah

Updates

The first order of business was to rid Noah of Heartworms. Treatment was given during May, and Noah did GREAT. During his treatment, GRRCC made it priority to find Noah a good, loving, stable environment in which to live during his surgeries and recovery. Club members Donald and Karen Kull offered just the home Noah needed, and agreed to foster him for as long as necessary.

After reviewing options for Noah hips, GRRCC decided to seek out Dr. Trevor, a surgeon who performed a hip replacement for another GRRCC rescue (Casey Lustig), and found that he was located in Goochland, VA (near Richmond). We were extremely pleased with the work he did on Casey, and wanted the same for Noah.

Noah made his first trip to VA in late May for his preliminary visit with Dr. Trevor. This visit revealed that one hip was totally dislocated and has been for some time. Noah had compensated for the dislocation and had learned to walk with it. Dealing with this hip would be the priority.

On June 22nd, Noah and his traveling companions, club members Kathy Nixon and Linda Johnson, accompanied by Linda’s niece Jamie, made their way once again to Goochland, VA for Noah’s first surgery. Once again, Noah did GREAT!! Within three days Noah was back home with his foster parents who were prepared to help him deal with the recovery.

Throughout this time, many wonderful, "Golden" people made donations to help Noah. By mid August, GRRCC had raised the funds needed to see Noah through his surgeries and treatments.

Naoh’s surgery required a recovery period of approximately three months. During this time he became stronger and healthier, and walked with much more mobility and much less pain. In late September, Noah visited a local surgeon for his follow-up. Noah was doing so well from his first surgery, that the surgeon did not want to subject him to another one at this time.

A replacement of the left hip is unavoidable for Noah, but for now he will enjoy life with the surgery and treatments he has received. Not only is Noah getting around better these days, he is doing it in his new "forever" home. Noah’s foster parents, Donald and Karen Kull have decided that they are meant to be his "forever" parents.

Congratulations to Donald, Karen and Noah Kull.

GRRCC wishes to extend the sincerest of gratitude to everyone who helped make this new life possible for Noah.

GRRCC and the Kull’s will be there for Noah when his doctors decide it is time for his final surgery.

Together we have all made a difference in the life of Noah.
