Melbourne “Mellie” AlsopIN LOVING MEMORY Dear Friends ~ Today is a very sad day for Alan and me as we said goodbye to our Melbourne – Mellie Girl as she was affectionately known to us. That little girl who used to steal socks from our shoes, from the laundry basket, and from other people’s suitcases, quickly stole our hearts. She was not particularly bright and in her later years developed a lot of quirks, but she had the prettiest, sweetest face of any golden we’ve had and was the most affectionate of all of them. If she had been human (which I believe she partly was), she would have been an event planner. She loved to be recognized, and she loved any reason for a social occasion. When she put her bandana on, she knew we were going to have company. Unlike Sydney, she preferred bunnies to squirrels, but her hip dysplasia and arthritis prevented her from giving the bunnies in our yard much of a run for their money. Like us, she loved nature and just relished at spending time outside with us watching the birds or the Mellie was known as the rally girl after she survived over a week in the hospital from eating Alaskan fish emulsion from around our roses. She survived 2 terrible bouts of nosebleeds. We took Mellie with us to visit my dad, and she developed a nose bleed that lasted 3 days. She would sneeze and throw clots all over us and all over everything. Alan and I both were on the motel floor with towels trying to get the blood out of the carpet. She bled all over Alan’s new car, and people looked at us like we’d been involved in a murder when we had to race into convenience stores or Walmarts to get more towels about every 30 miles of our 600 mile trip. She lived through a bout of gallstones, spine strokes, mini strokes, and more recently off the chart elevated kidney enzymes. We were always in awe at how she could rally one more time. Had she rallied this time, she might have made it to her 14th birthday in early October. We held Mellie while she took her last breath and we are at peace knowing she is now with our previous Goldens, Kipper and Sydney. She’ll remain in our hearts forever, and when we get her ashes back, her box will find its place next to theirs. |
