Basic Golden Retriever InformationHere are some basic facts about Golden Retrievers that may help you decide whether or not this is the right breed of dog for your family. Males are bigger than the females, in that they are taller and weigh more, but appearance wise, they also have a bit of a distinctive head shape that is quite impressive to look at. They all have an undercoat, but there is still some variance of their coat types, as some of them have a more curly type coat, while others are softer and carry a straighter top coat. Goldens shed most all year round and there are least two times a year that it is a lot. You can expect dog hair everywhere if you own a Golden Retriever. They need to be brushed daily and regular use of an undercoat rake will significantly improve the shedding. If you do not like dog hair in your house a Golden is probably not the dog for you Goldens are a lot of fun! This breed, part of the sporting group, is very energetic and can play for hours. Goldens need a good walk every day even if you have a yard. They enjoy being active, playing games, learning tricks and participating in activies like obedience, agility, flyball or just a game of soccer in the yard. Golden Retrievers have an instinctive love for water – if there is water around, their in it, including a puddle. This can make bathing them a little bit easier and also allows them to help hunt game near bodies of water. Excellent surrogate mothers, Golden Retrievers have been known to take care of kittens and even a tiger cub or two! These dogs are sometimes able to produce milk for their foster offspring even if they did not give birth recently themselves. A Golden Retrievers life expectancy is 12-14 years, but there has been reports of them living for up to 16 years. They love to retrieve so don’t be surprised when they have the socks you left on the floor in their mouth when company comes over. |
